Making the Invisible Visible
With a goal of making the invisible visible, our innovative, ongoing public awareness project portrays the face of dyslexia in portrait images and interviews with dyslexic individuals, as well as those who support them. Years in the making, this project depicts the diversity of dyslexia as well as the shared common experience. The images and powerful statements convey the depth of experience and profound wisdom that is characteristic of the dyslexic community, from young children to senior citizens.
From formal studio settings to school grounds and workplaces, images from the project inform the mind and touch the heart. Portions of the project have been exhibited in libraries and bookshops, as well as at seminars and dyslexia awareness events throughout Southern California. The ongoing project will continue to expand as opportunity and funding allow
Photographer Monie deWit, who is dyslexic and the mother of a child with dyslexia teamed with journalist Cheri Rae, also the mother of a dyslexic child, to create the 1 in 5 Project.
